SPECTRA:
High performance ballistic
material and its many advantages
Spectra
is, quite simply, the strongest fiber ever made. Pound for pound, it is
ten times stronger than steel. Spectra was developed by and is available
exclusively from the High Performance Fibers Group of Allied-Signal,
Inc.
Spectra
fibers are engineered for the most outstanding combination of cut and
chemical resistance. With the addition of excellent flexibility and
lightweight strength, these are the same qualities most frequently
sought after in a multitude of demanding applications for protective
clothing.
Spectra
is chemically inert. Exposure to seawater, and other chemicals such as
gasoline, kerosene, hydraulic fluid, etc. will not degrade Spectra.
Spectra
is highly resistant to moisture. Its ballistic properties are not
degraded even by immersion in water. Protracted soaking in seawater has
little effect on Spectra. Spectra will work as well under water as it
does when dry.
Spectra
has the lowest weight. A Spectra vest will weigh about 25% less than an
aramid vest of equivalent protection. Less weight can reduce fatigue for
the wearer.
